Grinding Equipment

Autogenous Mill

An autogenous mill uses the ore itself as grinding media. No steel balls are added. Ore chunks break by impact and attrition inside the rotating drum.

Technical parameters

It typically handles primary grinding after a primary crusher, or directly from run-of-mine. The mill discharge feeds a secondary ball mill for fine grinding. Hydrocyclones or screens close the circuit.

The table presents 15 autogenous mill models. The drum diameter and length increase across the range, giving progressively larger effective volumes. Main motor power rises with drum size. A plant engineer must match the required grinding volume and power draw to the ore characteristics and target throughput when choosing a model.

Parameter boundary

Standard-model catalogue figures. Actual capacity, power draw and wear life shift with ore properties, feed gradation and circuit conditions. Use them to shortlist, then confirm the duty by testwork, flowsheet calculation and a written confirmation from the manufacturer.

What decides the selection

Before selecting an autogenous mill model, the buyer must determine the ore's grindability through standard tests such as the Bond work index or pilot-scale autogenous milling tests. The feed size distribution, target product P80, plant throughput, and ore competency are essential inputs. The mill diameter, length, and motor power are then sized accordingly.

  • Bond work index or measured grinding energy
  • Feed and product particle size
  • Pulp density
  • Throughput
  • Number of grinding stages
  • Liner and grinding media selection
  • Specific energy consumption
  • Closed-circuit classification arrangement
