Metal Detector

A metal detector mounted over the conveyor belt emits a constant electromagnetic field. Tramp metal entering the field triggers a signal that stops the belt or activates a divert gate. This prevents crusher jams, belt rips, and mill liner damage.

Technical parameters

Positioned after primary scalping and ahead of secondary crushing, the detector works in tandem with an electromagnetic iron remover. The remover extracts the metal following detection. Together they reduce unscheduled maintenance and product contamination.

The table lists 17 standardised models covering a range of belt widths, sensitivity thresholds, and power configurations. Belt width determines the model groups (JTQ-500 to JTQ-1000 and beyond), while sensitivity sets the minimum detectable metal size. Power requirements and cooling method (air or oil) vary; select for the duty cycle and ambient conditions. Review applicable belt speed and input voltage to ensure compatibility with site infrastructure.

Standard-model catalogue figures. Actual capacity, power draw and wear life shift with ore properties, feed gradation and circuit conditions. Use them to shortlist, then confirm the duty by testwork, flowsheet calculation and a written confirmation from the manufacturer.

What decides the selection

Before selecting a model, define the conveyor belt width, maximum belt speed, and the smallest tramp metal piece that must be detected. Confirm available input voltage and preferred cooling method (forced air or oil). If integrated iron discharge is required, specify the belt width for the reject belt. The detector’s relay output must integrate with the plant control system for alarm or belt-stop functions. Coordinate with the electromagnetic iron remover supplier to ensure matching interface signals.
